ou check your bank statement and see a mysterious charge:
Audible Mktp or Audible Adbl Amount: $14.95 (or sometimes $7.95)
You didn’t buy an audiobook. You don’t remember signing up for anything. So why is Amazon taking your money?
Here is the truth: You likely fell for the “Free Trial Trap” about 30 days ago. Audible (owned by Amazon) is aggressive about signing you up. Here is how to stop the bleeding and potentially get your money back.
1. How You Accidentally Signed Up
Most people sign up without realizing it.
- The Checkout Trap: When buying a physical book on Amazon, there is often a button that says “Read with Audible – Free.” If you check that box, you start a 30-day trial.
- The “Free Book” Offer: You clicked an ad for a free audiobook. The book was free, but it came with a subscription that auto-renews.
2. Identify the Charge
Audible has different plans. Check your statement to see which one you have:
- $14.95: Audible Premium Plus (1 Credit/month).
- $7.95: Audible Plus (Streaming only, no credits).
- $22.95: Platinum Monthly (2 Credits/month).
3. How to Cancel (You Cannot Do This in the App)
This is where people get stuck. You cannot cancel Audible from the iPhone or Android app. Apple and Google block the button to avoid paying fees.
The Desktop Method (The Only Way):
- Go to Audible.com on a computer (or use “Desktop Site” mode on your mobile browser).
- Log in with your Amazon account info.
- Hover over “Hi, [Name]!” at the top and click Account Details.
- Click the link under the text box that says “Cancel membership.”
- Ignore the offers: They will offer you discounts to stay. Keep clicking “Continue to Cancel” until you see the confirmation screen.
4. Can I Get a Refund?
Unlike Amazon Prime, Audible does not guarantee automatic refunds for unused months. However, their customer service is very lenient.
The “Chat Trick”:
- Go to Audible Customer Service Chat.
- Say this: “I did not realize I was subscribed to a monthly plan. I have not used the service or downloaded any books since the charge date. Please cancel and refund the last charge.”
- Result: If you haven’t used your “Credits,” they will almost always refund the last 1-2 months as a courtesy.
Warning: Once you cancel, you lose any unused “Credits” immediately. If you have credits stacked up, spend them on books first! You get to keep the books forever, even after you cancel.
Summary Checklist
- Don’t look in the App: You must use a browser to cancel.
- Spend Credits First: Don’t let them vanish.
- Ask for a Refund: Chat support is your friend here.
